Twenty Want to be President

Posted on July 9, 2019 at 5:02 PM Comments comments (10706)
Twenty Democrats, including many women, want to be our next President to replace Donald Trump, a Republican.  We will vote in November next year, 2020.
All the Democrats agree that the treatment of immigrants on the border of Mexico is one of the first things that needs to change.  It will forever be an embarrassment to this country that children have been taken from their parents and kept in crowded cages.  And President Trump has made enemies out of our friends and he has become friends with our enemies!  (North Korea and Russia)
As we start the process of choosing his replacement, Joe Biden (former Vice President under Barack Obama), has the most support.
What is scary is that about 40% of the American people approve of President Trump!

7.1 Earthquake in California

Posted on July 9, 2019 at 4:49 PM Comments comments (4606)
On July 4, Independence Day, there was a 6.4 earthquake (on the richter scale) in the little desert towns of Ridgecrest and Trona, California.  The next day there was a 7.1 - ten times bigger!  These towns are in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and about 120 miles from where I live.  There were no serious injuries or deaths, and I didn't even feel them.  Other people here felt them, but at the time of the second quake, I was driving and I didn't feel it. Even though 7.1 is not a huge earthquake, there was a lot of damage and the people who live there are scared to sleep in their houses because every few minutes there is an aftershock.  Everyone is talking about the earthquakes because for the last twenty years California has been abnormally quiet.  It is normal to feel the ground shake sometimes in California, but it hasn't happened much in the last twenty years.  Children and teenagers aren't used to them. And this has given the authorities the opportunity to remind us all to be prepared.  Big earthquakes will happen in the Los Angeles area with more serious results.  And we are still waiting for "the Big One" when the San Andreas Fault breaks and everyone will be affected.

2018 Fires in California

July was a very hot, uncomfortable month, with temperatures over 100 degrees. Now the temperatures are in the 90's, and cool weather won't come until October.
With the hot weather we had some huge, devastating fires in California. Two of the largest ever were in northern California and I was more aware of two in southern California. Last week the air was full of smoke and ash at my house from a fire in the mountains south of Corona. Six fire fighters have lost their lives. I have a nephew that worked for a couple of weeks fighting two of the fires. Of course the destruction of thousands of trees is very important. But the emphasis was on saving people and their homes.
One of the fires was near Yosemite National Park and the park had to be closed for a couple of weeks because of so much smoke in the air. Some fires continue to burn, but they are slowly being controlled.
Residents in southern California were very angry when two men were arrested for starting the two fires.

Some of you have left comments on one of my blogs, but you didn't see them appear.  I check what you wrote and approve it before it shows on the website.  This is to avoid spam.  But I sometimes don't do it quickly.  Please be patient.  I don't have a computer at home so I use one at the library, and it may take a week or two.  Recently the computers at the library haven't been working, so it took longer to approve the comments.  Thank you for visiting my blog.  There are a lot of new things to write about and I hope to have time to share my thoughts with you soon.  -Delbert Schwarz

No Nuclear War!

Posted on June 12, 2018 at 4:20 PM Comments comments (1565)
Last year I was paying attention to the news, trying to determine if North Korea was now capable of sending a nuclear bomb to Los Angeles, near where I live.  The leader had expressed his purpose to possess the ability to destroy the United States.  President Trump warned that that would be the end of North Korea.  It would have been a lot easier for North Korea to bomb South Korea.  The capital city is right on the border, with a population of 28 million.  32,000 American troops have been in South Korea since the Korean War in the 1950's.  Guam is an important military base for the U.S., and Kim Jong Un was shooting missiles in that direction. They were flying over Japan.  It was an accident waiting to happen.
Who could have guessed that yesterday Kim Jong Un would have a big smile as he shook hands with the U.S. President and then signed an agreement to get rid of all of his nuclear weapons?  It seemed unreal.  We hope North Korea can make the changes they have promised and seek peaceful relations with the rest of the world.  President Trump said they even talked about improving the treatment of citizens and prisoners.  No one understands the Korean leader and what he is thinking and what he wants.  But maybe now that he is famous, he will make changes that will be good for his people and will save the world.

Spring Has Come

We finally have some beautiful weather in Southern California.  Compared to other places, it is usually nicer here.  But sometimes it is a little too cold or a little too hot or a little too windy, and we complain.  Today it is beautiful and sunny and the temperature is perfect.  I hope you are enjoying nice weather too.
I came to the library today and I have enough time to check on my website and write a short blog.  The website and the blog are for people who are learning English.  The blogs are to give them practice.  So if you find my writing uninspiring, maybe that explains it.  If you respond to a blog, it will not be published until I read it and approve it.  Otherwise people use the space to advertise products that they want to sell.

My Religion

Posted on May 11, 2017 at 8:15 PM Comments comments (461)
Life is a mystery. Everyone wonders: Why was I born? Why am I here? Where was I before I was born? Or I guess I just didn't exist. When I die, is that the end? The universe seems so big and nobody can count the stars, which are huge suns with millions of miles in between and probably lots of planets. But the world is full of beautiful flowers and strange animals and millions of insects that are working hard. Now we know that everything is made up of atoms that we can't see that have many working parts. Scientists can't make life, they can only describe it. The body usually heals itself, but doctors have learned how to help it heal. Life is made of tiny cells that can only be seen in a microscope. But each cell is very complex and has many things going on inside it.

Scientists try to convince us that it's all just an accident! Come on! Everything is made so perfectly and amazingly! It doesn't look like an accident! But the only other explanation is that God made everything, and it is human nature to reject the supernatural. I think part of the problem is the fairy tale stories that we tell our children. A simple example is Santa Claus. We tell our children that it's true, he's real. And then when they discover that he isn't real, they begin to question other things. Mickey Mouse and all the Disney inventions - children learn that the stories aren't real. Just imaginary. So when we talk about the supernatural - God, angels, heaven, miracles - it is easy to think that it's just another made-up story. But if we accept the Bible and all that it says, suddenly everything makes sense. All the questions are answered.

I belong to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Seventh-day refers to the fact that the Bible says that the seventh-day of the week (Saturday) is a holy day of rest and worship. We go to church and spend time with the family. God knows that we need one day when we don't have to work. Adventist refers to our belief that Jesus will come to earth again to destroy sin and all bad things. Everyone who believes that Jesus came to earth and died to pay the price for our sins will live again with new perfect bodies that will never be sick or die again. Now when we die, we go to sleep and only Jesus can wake us when He comes. Then we are promised eternal life.

It's interesting that everybody in all parts of the world have a religion; a belief in the supernatural. All the pagans worship the sun or idols or nature or something. It shows that all people search to understand life. But if we believe in the supernatural, we also believe in Satan, or the devil, who tries to deceive people. He has more people on his side, but in the end he will lose and be destroyed. Because God is more powerful. He is the One who created the universe and our world and everything in it. He created you and me for a reason. We need to use our lives wisely, learn from the Bible and help others.

My Marriage and Honeymoon

Posted on May 4, 2017 at 6:47 PM Comments comments (495)
I got married for the first time in 1980.  But that only lasted for three years.  I have a grown daughter from that marriage.  But I have been single for most of my life, and I doubted that I would ever find the "perfect" person for me.  But God is good.  I found her two years ago.  It was a surprise.  Johana is a very short woman (five feet eight inches tall) from Guatemala.  I don't think I had ever met a woman from Guatemala before.  I was exactly who she was praying for, and I discovered that she had all of the qualities that I had been waiting to find.  We have the same religious beliefs, and that is very important for both of us.  We got married in June of 2015.  I would have been happy with a small, simple marriage ceremony, but she wanted a church wedding.  My family and some of her friends went (30) and members of our church.  In the end, there were about a hundred people.  And the wedding was amazingly beautiful and perfect.  I speak Spanish and teach English.  She wanted me to teach her English, but we still speak Spanish at home.  Our wedding was bilingual.  Our pastor did a great job in both languages.

Southern California is full of wonderful tourist destinations, so we spent our honeymoon here.  We went to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Catalina Island, and the Los Angeles Zoo.  Disneyland had special programs celebrating its 60th anniversary.  We saw some beautiful, amazing shows!  But many of the usual rides were closed, and I was disappointed that we couldn't see more of the usual attractions.  We enjoyed Knott's Berry Farm a lot.  It isn't as famous as Disneyland, but I like the old-west theme.  Catalina Island is a secret Southern California destination.  You go by boat one hour into the Pacific Ocean from Long Beach.  It is a beautiful place, but we got there too late to go on the tours and it was a cloudy, cool day.  It looked like it might rain at any moment, but it didn't.  So we need to go there again someday.  We didn't like the Los Angeles Zoo.  It is built on a mountain, so you get very tired climbing up and down.  And we didn't see very many animals.  The San Diego Zoo is much better.

A New Blog for You

I apologize for the long break in my blogs. I know that many people read these. I finally met the love of my life and I got married two years ago. You can see pictures if you look for Del Schwarz on Facebook. That has kept me busy and I don't have a computer at home. I am using one at the library. I miss having one with Spanish keys to use on my website.
Of course, the most important thing to talk about is our new president. Everyone was surprised when Donald Trump won the election. His ideas are very different from previous presidents. He wants to change everything. But he is discovering that it isn't easy to change some things. A lot of Americans do not agree with his ideas, but some do. Congress is responsible for changing laws and paying for things. So we'll see what happens.
Last Monday evening, my wife and I went to see the new Disney movie, "Born in China", a nature film about snow leopards, pandas and monkeys of China. It is a beautiful movie! I highly recommend it.
I will try to write a new blog every week. My purpose is to give practice to those who are learning English. I appreciate your comments. I read your comments and approve them before they appear on the website, so don't try to advertise products that you want to sell.

Je ne suis pas Charlie

Je ne suis pas Charlie - I am not Charlie.  I'm sorry.  I don't agree.  Obviously the gunmen in Paris were wrong to commit murder.  Everyone knows that it's wrong to kill.  But it's also wrong to make fun of God and religion, even if you are French.  There should be some limit to freedom of speech.  That is my idea.
There are other new rules for the new year that I don't agree with.
I still believe that:
1.  It is wrong for a young black man to attack a policeman,  even if he doesn't have a weapon.
2.  It is wrong for men to marry men and for women to marry women.  It is repugnant!   The government may decide that it's OK, but God will never approve of it.
