Jesus (yí-sas) Christians celebrate the birth of

                       Jesus Christ at Christmas, December 25.

Virgen Mary (ver-yen mery) La Virgen María, madre de Jesús.

                          Mary was the mother of Jesus.

Joseph (yó-sef) José, el padre de Jesús.

                         Joseph was the father of Jesus.

angels Un coro de ángeles anunció las buenas noticias a

(ein-yels) los pastores. Angels are bright messengers from

                   heaven who told the shepherds that Jesus had

                     been born.

shepherds los pastores Men who take care of sheep are

                     called "shepherds".

three wise men los reyes magos La Biblia no dice

(waiz) cuantos había, pero en la tradición

                 americana, había tres. Wise men

                significa "hombres sabios" o "eruditos".

                  Eran hombres que estudiaban las

                 estrellas y entendían la importancia de

                 la nueva estrella que apareció.

King Herod El Rey Herodes quien trató de matar a Jesús.

Bethlehem Belén, ciudad donde nació Jesús.

                    Bethlehem is the city where Jesus was born.

star La estrella compuesta de ángeles, que marcaba el

             lugar donde nació Jesús.

donkey (dan-ki) El burro que cargó a María a Belén.

sheep (shiip) Las ovejas, cuidadas por los pastores.

camels Los camellos que transportaron a los reyes magos

                          y sus tesoros.

manger (mein-yer) El pesebre. Jesus was born in a barn and his

                            parents laid him in the place designed for the

                            animals' food called the "manger".

gold Oro, uno de los regalos traídos por los reyes magos.

                       The three wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincese and myrrh.

frankincense and myrrh (mir) eran perfumes que los reyes

                      magos trajeron a Jesus. These were very

                             rare and expensive perfumes.

                           Christmas carols are beautiful songs that

                         we sing about Christmas.

Christmas cards Tarjetas de saludos navideños.

                        We send cards to our family and friends,

                            wishing them a happy Christmas.

gifts regalos (significa lo mismo que presents)

                          Presents and gifts mean the same thing. We give

                           things when we remember that God gave Jesus to

                             us. presents = gifts

                   de pino, que se usa como decoración de

                      navidad) A traditional wreath is a circle made of

                   small pine branches with decoration.

holly (jali) Rama de acebo que se usa de decoración por su

            fruto rojo. Holly has a beautiful red berry. The

                colors of Christmas are green and red.

mistle toe Muérdago Una planta que se acostumbraba

                colgar arriba de las puertas. Según la

                  tradición, si un caballero encuentra a una

                     señorita debajo del mistle toe, él tiene

                          derecho de darle un beso.

jingle bells Campanitas Bells son campanas. Jingle

                     refiere al sonido de campanitas, especial-

                         mente en un caballo cuando lleva un trineo

                              deslizando sobre la nieve. Little bells.

                            tinsel Oropel. Son hilos brillantes de aluminio que

                             colgamos sobre el árbol de navidad. Tinsel is

                                strings of aluminum that we hang on a Christmas

                              tree to make it pretty.

candy canes (keins) Dulces de rojo y blanco, en forma de los

                          bastones que usaban los pastores. Red and white

                                    candy in the form of canes.

Secular Vocabulary

Merry Christmas Feliz Navidad Merry significa alegre.

                          Decimos, "Happy Thanksgiving" and

                           "Happy New Year". Yo no sé por qué

                             no decimos, "Happy Christmas". Pero

                            no es común.

Christmas Eve Nochebuena, el 24 de diciembre.

                           The night of December 24. Some families open

                               their presents on Christmas Eve.

Santa Claus El anciano alegre que trae regalos a todos los

                            niños que se han portado bien todo el año.

                              El llega a medianoche, pero solamente si

                                    los niños están bien dormidos. A veces

                                    usa el nombre, Saint Nick. The old man with

                                  a white beard who brings toys and presents to

                         good boys and girls everywhere in the world.

elf, elves Los duendes trabajan todo el año, fabricando

North Pole El Polo Norte donde vive Santa Claus.

                                         Santa Claus lives at the North Pole.

sleigh El trineo de Santa Claus. Santa Claus travels in a sled

                                 or sleigh over the snow when he brings the toys.

reindeer Los renos que jalan el trineo. Esta palabra es

                               igual en singular y plural. Santa Claus tiene

                           ocho renos. Santa Claus has 8 reindeer that

                           pull the sleigh.

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer El noveno reno, a veces

                      olvidado, que tenía la nariz roja y luminosa.

                              Los otros renos se burlaban de él y no lo

                                  dejaban jugar con ellos. Pero en una

                                navidad con mucha neblina, Rudolfo se hizo

                           héroe, guiando con seguridad el trineo de

                         Santa Claus. Sometimes we forget Rudolph,

                    the 9th reindeer. He had a very shiny nose

                   and he wasn't very popular until one very foggy

                               Many houses in the United States have a place

                              inside to burn wood. This special place is called

                              a fireplace.

chimney Chimenea (la parte que conduce el humo al

                            exterior de la casa). The smoke from the fire

                                   goes out through the chimney. Santa Claus uses

                                      the chimney to enter the house.

snowman Hombre de nieve.

Frosty the Snowman Era un hombre de nieve especial.

                                    Frosty was a magical snowman that began to

                                    play with the children when they put his hat on.
